Trees

Because trees can live for a long time —centuries in some cases— it's important to choose a tree that is appropriate. Take time to consider what you want your tree to do. Maybe, you want a tree to provide lots of shade or to produce pretty flowers. The following trees are drought-tolerant and most require relatively little maintenance. These trees are good choices for the soil, humidity and even salty areas of southern Florida.

Technically a shrub, it makes for a great flowering tree if trained to grow from one trunk when young. Flower - Light Pink, about 3 inches wide. Grows to 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
Christmas Palm Christmas Palm

One of the most popular palms for residential use because of its attractive appearance and small size. Grows 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
Areca Palm Areca Palm

Acacia smalii

Areca Palms are great for inexpensive screening. A good choice for a natural look and for blocking unwanted views. Grows 20 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
Blue Palo Verde Bamboo Palm

Bamboo Palm are small in size and adapt very well to low light. Its growth habit is much like the Areca Palm only smaller and greener. Grows up to 11 feet by 4 feet.
Black Olive Tree Black Olive

Commonly used throughout South Florida and makes a wonderful very large shade tree. Does not produce an edible olive. Grows up to 50 feet high and 50 feet wide.
Carissa Tree Carissa Tree

Carissa Tree also know as Natal Plum makes a great hedge plant when cut back due to its dense foliage and strong thorns. Very fragrant. Up to 20 feet by 8 feet.
Cattley Guava Cattley Guava

Exceptional for South Florida. Develops character and multiple trunks as it ages. Can be used for a hedge. Fruit is delicious. Grows 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide.
Dwarf Royal Palm Dwarf Royal

ryostorea elata

A very popular palm for residential use because of its attractive appearance and small size. Can be planted in multiples. Grows 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
Ficus Benjamina Tree Ficus Benjamina Tree

Also know as the 'Weeping Fig', the Ficus Benjamina is suitable for growing outdoors or indoors in a planter.
Fox Tail Triple Palm Fox Tail Triple Palm

Smaller than Queens and Royals which makes it ideal for residences. Has a very distinctive "foxtail" appearing frond. Grows to be 30 feet tall and up to 14 feet wide. 
Fox Tail Single Palm Fox Tail Single Palm

Similar to the Foxtail Triple with a more feather like frond. The single line frond still takes on the appearance of a foxes tail. Grows 30 feet tall and up to 14 feet wide. 
Laurel Oak Tree Laurel Oak Tree

Faster growing with a shorter life than a Live Oak. This tree is native to South Florida and provides acorn food to birds and squirrels. Grows 70 feet tall by 30 feet wide.
Ligustrum Tree Ligustrum Tree

ligustrum japonicum

Can be used as an evergreen shrub or small tree. Small white malodorous flowers and fruit is oblong blue/black drupe. Grows up to 30 feet tall. 
Little Gem Magnolia Tree Little Gem Magnolia Tree

Unlike other trees in the Magnolia family, the 'little gem' blooms very early and is very fragrant. Blossoms as beautiful as the Grandiflora. Grows less than 40 feet tall.
Live Oak Tree Live Oak Tree

The most beautiful shade trees in South Florida. Orchids, Resurrection Ferns and Spanish Moss attach themselves to the rough bark. Up to 50 feet tall and 60 feet wide. 
Mahogany Tree Mahogany Tree

Tough fast growing shade tree that handles the most difficult of environmental stress.  Leaf drop only once per year. Grows up to 50 feet tall and 50 feet wide. 
Queen Palm Tree Queen Palm Tree

syagrus romanzoffiana

The most standard palm tree throughout South Florida. Grows up to 50 feet tall and has few problems with pests and disease. 
Red Maple Tree Red Maple Tree

Famous throughout the country for its bright red foliage. Incredibly versatile and color last for months instead of weeks. Grows up to 50 feet high and 30 feet wide.
Raphis Palm Tree Raphis Palm Tree

Also Known as the Lady Palm, has been in the South Florida landscape for decades. Popular indoors and out, can be grouped together. Grows up to 8 feet by 6 feet. 
Surinam Cherry Tree Surinam Cherry Tree

Can be used as a bush or a small tree. Maybe begin to fruit as early as two. Fruit develops and ripens in three weeks from flowering. Can grow up to 25 feet tall.  
Triple Date 'Pygmy' Palm Tree Triple Date 'Pygmy' Palm Tree

phoenix roebelenii

One of the most commonly used palms in South Florida. Very well adapted to high winds and can be doubled or tripled up. Grows up to 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide.
